Welcome September Skies

The best part of September is the crisp blue sky, chill in the air when waking then a gradual warming of the day. The world always seems to have its saturation turned up a notch in September.

I'm a baking and gardening enthusiast. I make silly movies that will never be relevant but pleases me all the same. I tend to say things that make people look at me like "whaaaaa?" I get it from my mother and she gets it from her father. Tradition is nice.

Nanouk Plant

​The tough and mighty Nanouk plant was developed in 2012 in Sappemeer, The Netherlands and is sometimes referred to as Fantasy Venice. Nanouk originated in Central/South America until recently when  two selected seedlings of  Tradescantia albiflora  were   cross-pollinating giving us the breed we grow  today. The compact yet sprawling and upright Nanouk is considered a fast grower, typically reaching a height and width of just under three-and-a-half feet. The  leaf varies in shades of green, light purple, grayish green, pink, and cream. The Nanouk grows best in bright indirect sunlight to full sun in temperatures  between 55° and 75°. A s with most houseplants, overwatering is more problematic than under watering, therefore allow the soil to become almost dry in-between watering and then water thoroughly. Royal Empress Tree (First Season Growth)

When I bought my Royal Empress tree it was a bare root with a bud, nothing more. That was 5 months ago (beginning of growing season for north east). I told family, friends and neighbors that a huge tree would appear here shortly. They all laughed at me (some people, MOM, even made financial bets with me that the little root with a bud would not grow beyond a few feet tall at most. I PROVED THEM WRONG!  My two Royal Empress trees (sold to me as sterile, non-invasive variety) have shot up to over 8 feet tall and the growing season has not ended. As you can see I am beginning to trim the bottom leaves little by little as the trunk matures. Can't wait to see the beautiful flowers they bare and I'm looking forward to continue watching these two trees reach toward the clouds. Btw…people stop in their cars to ask me what they are ALL THE TIME. They literally have become the talk of the neighborhood. Pretty fun stuff! (click on first image to see progression of growth) ...

Maiden Mist Rhododendron
Spring Growing Season 3

The one species of plants I did have trouble with were these Maiden Mist dwarf variety rhododendrons. My original 3 have dwindled down to one healthy plant and a sad small "living section" of a second. For all intense purposes, let's just say I lost two to the brutal winter. The lone survivor is currently in bloom, showcasing it's brilliant deep pink blossoms that fade to white upon opening. The amount of flowers and the actual size of the clusters of the flowers are not as plentiful as they were in the first year. I'm going to keep my eye on the lone survivor and see how I can help nurture it back to full health. I'll post it's progress. [See first year in full bloom here]
