Royal Empress Tree (First Season Growth)

When I bought my Royal Empress tree it was a bare root with a bud, nothing more. That was 5 months ago (beginning of growing season for north east). I told family, friends and neighbors that a huge tree would appear here shortly. They all laughed at me (some people, MOM, even made financial bets with me that the little root with a bud would not grow beyond a few feet tall at most. I PROVED THEM WRONG! My two Royal Empress trees (sold to me as sterile, non-invasive variety) have shot up to over 8 feet tall and the growing season has not ended. As you can see I am beginning to trim the bottom leaves little by little as the trunk matures. Can't wait to see the beautiful flowers they bare and I'm looking forward to continue watching these two trees reach toward the clouds. Btw…people stop in their cars to ask me what they are ALL THE TIME. They literally have become the talk of the neighborhood. Pretty fun stuff!

I'm a baking and gardening enthusiast. I make silly movies that will never be relevant but pleases me all the same. I tend to say things that make people look at me like "whaaaaa?" I get it from my mother and she gets it from her father. Tradition is nice.

      The leaves are much smaller this year. I'm focusing on shaping the tree so that the branches begin at about 6' or so.

      Hi Neil. I posted two new pictures of the Empress trees. The day was a bit dreary so I'll take some more in a month or so to follow up on its growth. They are looking good and still keeping the neighbors intrigued.

I walked into The Dee's Nursery two weeks ago and found a few Willow Bushes sitting on the ground. Immediately I knew I had to have one! The leaves are variegated green with ivory and white and the new growth is pink. It flows delicately in the wind yet its full foliage makes it look quite substantial. Rain Chains

History Rain chains (‘kusari doi’ in Japanese) in concept are not a new idea. For hundreds of years, the Japanese have used the roof of their homes to collect water, transporting it downward with chains and finally depositing the rain water into large barrels for household water usage. Japanese temples often incorporate quite ornate and large rain chains into their design. Rain chains have been spotted in South America, where chain is easier to obtain that machined downspouts. At the Bottom The Japanese often put a ceramic or stoneware pot beneath the chain which fills with water, so that when it rains, the water drips from the chain into the pot, creating a beautiful display. You can make a square out of redwood or cedar beneath the chains and fill it with small pebbles. If it is damp regularly, moss will grow between the pebbles. You can also place a single paver tile or a few medium size stones under the chain to break the fall of the water. from RainChains.com

The Polka Dot Begonia (Begonia Maculata)

I received a shipment of Polka Dot Plants ( Begonia Maculata ) which had dropped all their leaves due to the drastic change in temperature; from hot greenhouse to cold air conditioned store. Even though the plant was 'naked' (as you can see above) I decided to buy one and nurse it back to life. I've had it for a few weeks and it is now slowly beginning to strengthen. The small dotted leaf on the bottom of the photo is new growth. I keep my Polka Dot Begonia in a room with lots of indirect sunlight. When I turn the AC on, I usually move the plant to a room that is warmer. I know this isn't feasible for everybody but do your best to keep the temperature steady.
