Rain Chains

History
Rain chains (‘kusari doi’ in Japanese) in concept are not a new idea. For hundreds of years, the Japanese have used the roof of their homes to collect water, transporting it downward with chains and finally depositing the rain water into large barrels for household water usage. Japanese temples often incorporate quite ornate and large rain chains into their design. Rain chains have been spotted in South America, where chain is easier to obtain that machined downspouts.
At the Bottom
The Japanese often put a ceramic or stoneware pot beneath the chain which fills with water, so that when it rains, the water drips from the chain into the pot, creating a beautiful display.
You can make a square out of redwood or cedar beneath the chains and fill it with small pebbles. If it is damp regularly, moss will grow between the pebbles. You can also place a single paver tile or a few medium size stones under the chain to break the fall of the water.

I'm a baking and gardening enthusiast. I make silly movies that will never be relevant but pleases me all the same. I tend to say things that make people look at me like "whaaaaa?" I get it from my mother and she gets it from her father. Tradition is nice.

I walked into The Dee's Nursery two weeks ago and found a few Willow Bushes sitting on the ground. Immediately I knew I had to have one! The leaves are variegated green with ivory and white and the new growth is pink. It flows delicately in the wind yet its full foliage makes it look quite substantial. Polka Dot Begonia - Six Months Later

In June 2021, I posted about the Polka Dot Begonia (Begonia Maculata) I salvaged from the garbage. A change of temperature during shipping had caused the entire box of plants to drop all their leaves. After a couple months of care, the begonia finally grew two small leaves and then remained like that for several months. Now after 6 months of being in my care the polka dot begonia has 7 leaves and is living a complete and happy life. One of the main lessons I learned while caring for Dot is that she doesn't like too much water and prefers to be in a spot with filtered sunlight.  Here is Dottie now:
