Let's Start with the Canvas

Not the prettiest sight I know but it will be when I'm done with it! The entire house was covered with 50+ year old bushes that were overgrown and way to crowded. My first attempt was to take my chances with major pruning and reshaping but alas I hated the look so I decided to pull all the bushes out and since ivy had taken over the trees, lawn and fence I also needed to buy ivy killer and round up. I'm not a fan of using these products nor do I like to kill any living plant but the ivy was so invasive I had no other choice.
Once all the shrubbery was gone I could picture the restoring process (that I've begun) and things are looking quite rosy. Neighbors are already stopping in their cars to compliment the new look of the house. So remember this picture because it won't look like this for long!


I'm a baking and gardening enthusiast. I make silly movies that will never be relevant but pleases me all the same. I tend to say things that make people look at me like "whaaaaa?" I get it from my mother and she gets it from her father. Tradition is nice.

The Beautiful Variegated Willow Bush

I walked into The Dee's Nursery two weeks ago and found a few Willow Bushes sitting on the ground. Immediately I knew I had to have one! The leaves are variegated green with ivory and white and the new growth is pink. It flows delicately in the wind yet its full foliage makes it look quite substantial. Rain Chains

History Rain chains (‘kusari doi’ in Japanese) in concept are not a new idea. For hundreds of years, the Japanese have used the roof of their homes to collect water, transporting it downward with chains and finally depositing the rain water into large barrels for household water usage. Japanese temples often incorporate quite ornate and large rain chains into their design. Rain chains have been spotted in South America, where chain is easier to obtain that machined downspouts. At the Bottom The Japanese often put a ceramic or stoneware pot beneath the chain which fills with water, so that when it rains, the water drips from the chain into the pot, creating a beautiful display. You can make a square out of redwood or cedar beneath the chains and fill it with small pebbles. If it is damp regularly, moss will grow between the pebbles. You can also place a single paver tile or a few medium size stones under the chain to break the fall of the water. from RainChains.com

The Polka Dot Begonia (Begonia Maculata)

I received a shipment of Polka Dot Plants ( Begonia Maculata ) which had dropped all their leaves due to the drastic change in temperature; from hot greenhouse to cold air conditioned store. Even though the plant was 'naked' (as you can see above) I decided to buy one and nurse it back to life. I've had it for a few weeks and it is now slowly beginning to strengthen. The small dotted leaf on the bottom of the photo is new growth. I keep my Polka Dot Begonia in a room with lots of indirect sunlight. When I turn the AC on, I usually move the plant to a room that is warmer. I know this isn't feasible for everybody but do your best to keep the temperature steady.
